Salvation Army holiday campaign to support over 100 local families

Dec 11, 2017 | 1:00 PM

Thanks to a number of fundraisers, Meadow Lake’s Salvation Army will be able to support local families once again this year.

Their Christmas hamper application process just closed and over 100 families from the area will receive packages of food and toys.

“We just finished taking in our applications, and certainly the numbers this year will be as high as we’ve seen for some years,” Maj. Peter Eason of the Salvation Army said. “Within each family, there’s a few people, so we’re talking hundreds of people. For an area this size, that’s a significant number.”

Over the campaign’s 80 years, the organization had raised money through the CJNS Empty Stocking Fund Radiothon, the traditional Christmas Kettle Campaign, and most recently the Red Shield campaign. Supporters purchase an emblem and the Meadow Lake Co-op matches donations up to $3,000.

Eason said the response to the campaigns locally has been very positive thus far, and are appreciated all year long.

“Throughout the year, there are different things that we’re called upon to assist people with,” Eason said. “The monies generated throughout Christmas not only make sure that we can help everybody that needs the help at Christmas, but we need that to carry us through the year. If it weren’t for the generosity of Meadow Lake and Northwest Saskatchewan, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”

Kettles are located at Madills on Centre St. and Extra Foods at the Meadow Lake Mall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the month. A number of local businesses also have counter-sized kettles.
