City of M.L. to wait on traffic study

Dec 15, 2017 | 11:01 AM

A look into Meadow Lake’s traffic bylaw after recent questions by council is stalled, for now.

Many of the city’s roads are uncontrolled intersections, with the exception of a number of streets near higher traffic areas. On Nov. 27, council heard a resident’s concern about Gibson Cres. needing a yield sign for its intersection with Bridger Dr.

City Manager Diana Burton said the yield sign intersections are set out in the Traffic Bylaw, which can be amended at the direction of council. However her recommendation was to conduct a traffic study rather than add one street to the bylaw.

“I believe the last entire community traffic study was quite a long time ago…we haven’t done on of any of the roads interior to the city in probably 20 or 30 years. Administration’s concern is making one-off decisions rather than having a plan and a justification for it,” Burton said at the Dec. 11 council meeting.

Coun. Conrad Read voiced his concerns, specifically on the cost for a consultant which would be roughly $22,000 to determine the traffic plan for a couple of intersections.

“I’m just wondering someone from internal to the city could do something at a fraction of the cost,” he said. “I would ask that administration would come with a few more options, most importantly costs or how we would do this before council made a decision.”

Read put forward a motion to defer the decision and discussion on the matter to 2018, which was unanimously passed.

In her report to council, Burton said administration will be working to improve the signage and communication regarding the use of uncontrolled intersections in the community, as this is a frequently raised question from the public.
