Meadow Lake’s Rebecca Merasty recently turned her passion for sport and resilience into an acting job for a feature Hollywood film about a volleyball team.

The Flying Dust First Nation actor was part of the feature film The Miracle Season, alongside Oscar-winner Helen Hunt. The trailer for the movie was recently released online and will be playing before the new Star Wars movie.

Her volleyball chops took her through high school and college, and after a tip from a friend, she decided to audition for the movie.

“I actually wasn’t going to go, but with a lot of encouragement from my friends, family and the support of Flying Dust, I made the trip to attend the tryout. It seemed like it was meant to be,” Merasty said.

The movie was filmed in Vancouver over a few months in 2016, and Merasty said it was an amazing experience from beginning to end.

“It was really exciting, and at moments very surreal,” she said. “When I found out that Helen Hunt was going to be the number one actor… that blew my mind. Also meeting the crew and getting to see how film works behind the scenes.”

Merasty is featured quite heavily in the film as the libero for the main cast volleyball team.

“Every play has to start with my pass,” she said. “I’m in all the team huddles. I was pretty lucky. We had to practice certain ways to dive for the right camera angles.”

Overall, Merasty said she’s incredibly honoured to have participated in a meaningful film.

“I’m really proud of this movie and how it portrays female athletes,” she said. “It felt really accurate, it was female athletes working really hard, achieving goals.”
