Year in Review – March 2017

Dec 26, 2017 | 9:00 AM

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2017, meadowlakeNOW is taking a look at some of the top news items that made headlines and newsmakers over the past 12 months.

On March 2, hockey fans filled the Meadow Lake and District Arena to witness some local hockey greats face Montreal Canadiens alumni. Proceeds from the near sold-out event were donated to the new Northland Pioneers Lodge as well as KidSport Meadow Lake, and other youth organizations.

The Meadow Lake Business Excellence (MLBEX) Awards took place on March 15 at the Civic Centre, hosted by the Meadow Lake and District Chamber of Commerce. Kirt and Terri Prete won the honour of Community Builder Wall of Fame. Other winners at the MLBEX awards included Cheryl Dodds winning the Volunteer Award; Antonio Vigor Briones received the Customer Service Award while the Aboriginal Award went to Tawaw Cabins. Neufeld Contracting was selected as the Small Business of the Year while Meadow Lake Welding captured the Business of the Year Award.

A week following the provincial budget announcement on March 22, Meadow Lake MLA and Minister of the Economy defended the cuts that were made in an effort to balance Saskatchewan’s $1.2 billion deficit.  An initial 58 per cent cut to library funding was announced (which was then reversed in April), STC was shuttered, and the restructuring of the grants-in-lieu program from SaskEnergy and SaskPower. Meadow Lake lost $73,000 in previously budgeted grants. Ultimately Harrison said it was all about returning to balance, stating it was important for the province, and other provinces are toiling with much larger deficits.
