M.L. Broncos have high hopes for matchup against La Ronge

Jan 5, 2018 | 1:00 PM

While the Meadow Lake Senior Broncos are pleased with their season thus far, there’s one team they’re still winless against. They’re hoping to remedy this tomorrow night against the La Ronge 89ers.

The Broncos are currently sitting at second place in the Beaver Lakes Hockey League standings, with only La Ronge ahead of them as the 89ers have played one less game than the Meadow Lake team.

Head coach Winston Morin said practice went well this week, and the team is going to focus on their power plays, as that has been the 89ers strength all season.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday night to see if we can get a win,” he said. “This week’s practice was to get the legs going again, feel the puck. But the boys looked sharp at practice so we’ll see how that translates into the game.”

Their last matchup of 2017 was against the Sandy Lake Chiefs on Dec. 23, were the Broncos were victorious with a score of 5-1.

At this point in the season, Morin said he is happy with how the team is performing, adding he has high hopes as the regular season winds down and the playoffs begin in February.

“Things are feeling pretty good,” he said. “Everyone’s playing well and healthy. The core group of veteran players really focuses everyone working as a team instead of individuals. We just focus on each guy doing their job. We just look at improving with every game.”

The puck drops Saturday, Jan. 6 at 8:30 p.m. at the Meadow Lake Arena.
