Winter Festival committee planning 2018 event and beyond

Jan 10, 2018 | 7:00 AM

Those busy planning Meadow Lake’s Winter Festival have hopes that it will be a longstanding cornerstone of celebrating winter life in the community.

The reincarnated winter extravaganza was brought back to life in 2017 after a nearly 20-year hiatus. The event originally started in 1970, and included a number of events like kiddy rides, parades, a skate-a-thon, power toboggan rides and snowmobile rallies over the years. Mascots like Bruce the Moose, Wylee Coyote and Road Runner were incorporated thanks to Al Harder.

Last year’s event had over 500 attendees and organizers are working on the 2018 event for Feb 2 to 4.

Cliff McKay, who is helping with the marketing portion of the event, said organizers hope to build on last year’s momentum.

“We’re always looking for people to help out,” he said. “But we’re also looking for future advancement to what the community wants to see, does somebody want to start something up and chair it.”

He said it would be great to have a mix of nostalgia mixed with the new ideas of the current day. In the past, there have been trapper-based events as well.

“We’d love to get some young people come in because maybe they have some new ideas to share,” McKay said. “But we need something happening in this community in the winter.”

This year’s event will include chucksleds, snowmobile rally, ice fishing derby, and a kids’ event.

McKay said anyone interested in helping out can attend planning meetings every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Lions’ Den, with the exception of tonight’s meeting which will take place at the Legion.
