M.L. Broncos gearing up for playoff runs

Jan 19, 2018 | 4:00 PM

Meadow Lake’s Senior Broncos only have a few games left in their regular season, and while they’re still focussed on the present, the players already have playoffs on their minds.

The two-time Beaver Lakes Hockey League (BLHL) champions are going to be participating in both league and provincial ‘Senior A’ playoffs starting in February.

The season has been a positive one thus far for the Broncos, as they are currently sitting in first in the BLHL with a record of six wins and two losses. In their most recent game, they travelled to Onion Lake and won over their hosts with a score of 8-1. The two teams will meet again in Meadow Lake on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Team captain Taylor Arnold said the team’s chemistry on and off the ice has been the key to their success so far and hopes the momentum will carry them far in both playoffs sets.

“Our team as a whole is pretty well-rounded,” he said. “Everybody is a good hockey player, our goaltending is strong, and everyone knows their roles. We always try to play four lines which has helped us quite a bit.”

An added day of practice is helping the team a great deal as well, Arnold said, adding Winston Morin and the rest of the coaching staff have been keeping an eye on the team’s strengths and weaknesses.

“Everybody’s focused, our practices have been pretty fast-paced,” he said. “Winston has been bringing some pretty good drills.”

The Broncos’ first provincial game will be an away game against the Hague Senior Royals on Saturday, Feb. 3. Arnold said the team’s experience with provincials last year was a learning curve, as they lost to Wilkie in the first round.

“The calibre was quite a bit better than the league play we were used to,” he said. “It was a good eye-opener for us to know what kind of competition is involved. You can’t take a shift off in Senior A. We just have to be ready to go.”

The BLHL playoff schedule will be released in the coming weeks after a regular season games wrap up in early February.
