Jan 22, 2018 | 5:03 PM

A 35-year-old Meadow Lake man who is co-accused in a case of neglect of five children, has been granted bail and was released on recognizance after appearing in Meadow Lake court via CCTV today.

The man and a 30-year-old woman are accused of neglecting five children after an investigation which began in July 2016. The children were removed from the residence at that time and have not been in the care of the two adults since then. Following an extensive investigation that involved many interviews and analysis of evidence, the pair was charged by Meadow Lake RCMP on Dec. 1, 2017, and arrested in Saskatoon on Dec. 6.

Both are charged with five counts of failure to provide necessaries of life, five counts of forcible confinement, and two counts of assault causing bodily harm. The male is also charged with one count of aggravated assault.

The name of the man cannot be released, as there is a publication ban on naming the victims or naming anyone that could identify the victims.

He was required to pay $500 bail, and released on several conditions. He must remain on 24-hour curfew until he registers for the electronic monitoring program, and will remain on the same curfew unless he has express permission from a probation officer. He also cannot be with anyone under the age of 16 unless another adult is present, and he cannot be present in any area where children under the age of 16 are present like public parks or swimming pools, etc.

As well, he cannot have any direct or indirect contact with her or any of the five children.

Crown prosecutor Andrew Clements, the man’s defence lawyer Erin Little, and the woman’s defence lawyer Rosanne Newman, will be meeting for a pre-trial management conference on Friday, March 2 at to discuss the logistics for the case.

Editor’s note: As this case is still before the courts, commenting will be closed.
