Meadow Lake teen excited to play at Telemiracle

Feb 21, 2018 | 1:00 PM

A young local singer, guitarist and ukulele player is no stranger to the stage, but she’s playing to the entire province for the first time at Telemiracle 42.

Thirteen-year-old Payton Getz will perform live March 4 at 12:50 p.m. during the second day of the telethon, which takes place in Regina at the Conexus Arts Centre. Getz auditioned in early January, and found out she was successful a couple weeks later. The local teen will sing a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.”

Getz said she was inspired to participate in the charity event after taking part in Meadow Lake’s radio broadcast last year.

“I’ve never been on the big stage before,” she said. “I did it last year locally, and since I had a bit more time to plan this year, I decided to do it. It’s all for a good cause. I just think it’s so cool we can all come together for this.”

As a performer, Getz said she wasn’t required to fundraise, but she decided to raise pledges anyway. A bake sale at Jonas Samson Junior High and a barbecue at the Meadow Lake Co-op raised over $1,100. Getz said she was pleased the community rallied behind her, and said the fundraising total is still climbing.

Getz’ mother Heather said family, friends and the community are delighted with Payton’s opportunity to perform at such a noteworthy event.

“We are really proud, first of all, that she’d even do something like this,” Heather said. “We’re proud that she wanted to fundraise, and she’s been working hard.”
