Conservation Officers investigate moose, fish waste

Feb 22, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Conservation officers are hunting a person who left a moose carcass to waste, and are taking an individual to court over roughly 100 of fish found dead on ice.

The moose was discovered skinned 11 kilometers north of Brancepeth, near Coxby Road, southeast of Prince Albert after conservation officers received a tip through their Turn In Poachers line Jan. 21. Officers estimated the moose was shot during the evening of Jan. 20, or the early morning of Jan. 21.

“From what I understand, a 4×4 was used to drive out into the field and that was it. They didn’t collect the moose; they left it there,” Conservation Officer Kevin Harrison said.

Harrison asked anyone with information regarding the moose carcass to contact the Turn-In-Poachers phone line, or file a tip online.

A separate incident involving hundreds of fish discovered near Buffalo Narrows is leading to court action.

Officers were dispatched to Churchill Lake, where they discovered roughly 100 walleye and 16 whitefish left to waste. A glove was also found on scene. Harrison said the matter will be coming before the courts shortly, but was unable to provide more details about the investigation.

“We can’t comment on that until court is all said and done,” Harrison said.

The Summary Offence Procedure Regulations state a penalty of $200 with an additional $50 per fish up to a maximum of $2,000 could be levied as a voluntary payment option. Harrison said conservation officers are pursuing a maximum fine in this case, though the sitting judge has authority to hand out greater or lesser penalties at their discretion.

Harrison said the individual responsible for leaving the fish to waste could also lose their recreational or commercial licences.
