La Loche shooter: Lawyers to discuss future sentencing dates Friday

Mar 15, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Last month, Judge Janet McIvor said the youth who killed four people and injured seven others in La Loche in January 2016 will be sentenced as an adult. Tomorrow, she will be meeting with defence and prosecution lawyers via phone at 3 p.m. in a Meadow Lake courtroom to sort out future dates of his sentencing details.

The young man, who is now 20 years old, was 17 when he gunned down brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine in a home before proceeding to the La Loche Community School where he killed teacher Adam Wood and teacher’s aide Marie Janvier. He also shot and injured seven others, including staff and students.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and seven counts of attempted murder in October 2016. Two weeks of sentencing hearings took place in May and June 2017 to determine if he would be sentenced as an adult or a youth.

During the Feb. 23 date in La Loche, McIvor said youth sentence would not be just.
