Local volleyball team plays M.L. RCMP in charity game

Meadow Lake Mounties attended a different kind of court last weekend as they played a charity volleyball game against the 16U Heat.

Organizer Randeen Wood said the March 18 game spawned from a chat she had earlier in the year with the team’s coach, Dustin Treptow.

“At the beginning of the year, he told the girls he wanted them to get out into the community and do something more than fundraise for the team,” she said. “They used to do the ‘Battle of the Badges’ hockey [game] and in talking to Sgt. [Ryan] How, I asked if they’d want to play the team and he agreed.”

After confirming members’ attendance, Wood asked Carpenter High School (CHS) principal Trevor Gerwing which cause was in need of extra funds. Wood learned the school food bank is accessed every day and the district is working on modernizing the CHS library.

“We booked the gym and said let’s do it,” Wood said. “We were happy with the turnout, and we raised about $900 for the library project, plus a whole lot of food we have to haul in. It’s a success.”

As for the game play, Wood said the RCMP players were very worthy rivals against the girls’ team.

“The RCMP played really well,” she said. “We played three sets, and they won the third. We had a few fun calls against the girls, like a toe over the line when it wasn’t. It was to make [the game] really fair and fun. The guys said they had a great time.”
