$10,000 prize offered in Big River Fish Derby

One of the biggest events on the Big River calendar kicks off tomorrow. It’s the 18th annual Fish Derby on Cowan Lake.

Organizer Maisie Krienke said the $10,000 prize for biggest fish is the major attraction for the hundreds of anglers who show up each year.

“We have a hundred prizes on offer whether you catch a fish or not,” she told meadowlakeNOW.

The event started off eighteen years ago as a major fundraiser when the community centre was being built, and Krienke said it’s been going strong ever since.

“We get a lot of support from many businesses and individuals and we’re known for being an area of great fishing,” she said. “It’s good to bring people into town.”

She said it’s something most anglers make a point of getting to each year.

“Many, many people return each year and have been coming since we started it. It’s very important to attract tourism and business,” she said.

The funds raised this year will go towards the ski hill and golf club at Big River.
