MLTC U16 boys volleyball team captures gold medal

Apr 4, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Yesterday was a golden day in sports for Team Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) at the Tony Cote First Nations Winter Games in Saskatoon.

The boys under-16 volleyball team won Team MLTC’s first gold medal of the games in the match against Team Battlefords Agency of Tribal Chiefs (BATC).

Quinton Desjarlais from the Flying Dust First Nation played left side on the team. He said out of the eight games the players only lost one, which qualified them for the finals against BATC.

“It was very nerve-wracking because they were a very strong team,” he said. “They were a good match for us. We just kept our positive energy up and cheered each other on even if we lost a point here and there.”

In their final set against BATC, Team MLTC ended up taking the match with a tight score of 25-23. Desjarlais said he and the rest of his teammates worked hard for the win.

“We were just really happy,” he said. “It was a proud feeling. There were times when we got down on ourselves, but in the end we pulled through and we got that momentum back. The stands were full of MLTC fans too.”

Out of the seven sports categories, Flying Dust athletes are taking part in basketball, hockey and volleyball. As of this afternoon, Team MLTC is sitting in second place in the point standings. The U14 girls hockey team captured a silver, while U14 boys walked away with a bronze.

The Tony Cote First Nations Winter Games wrap up on Friday, April 6.
