City to monitor animal complaints, work with bylaw department
The City of Meadow Lake, along with their bylaw department, will be keeping an eye animal protection.
City clerk Jessica Walters researched the topic after a resident raised concerns about the city’s current animal and dog protection bylaws at their March 12 meeting. Walters said all complaints of cruelty and neglect go to local police services, the SPCA, or the provincial Animal Protective Services agency. In Prince Albert, however, animal protection falls under bylaw enforcement.
“Bylaw Enforcement Officers in Prince Albert are also municipal police officers, which automatically gives them the authority to enforce the Act in a way that Meadow Lake’s officers cannot,” Walters said.
After consultation and discussions with Meadow Lake’s bylaw department, she said city administration did not recommend adding this type of provision unless it is a priority of Council to have a local, non-provincial, enforcement option available.
