Rural infrastructure investments designed to offer economic boost

A $14 million investment into Saskatchewan’s rural infrastructure is intended to make life easier for producers hauling their goods to market.

Eleven municipalities will receive grants this year under the Municipal Roads for the Economy Program (MREP). According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, the grants will provide a funding boost in municipalities which have seen increased traffic, and will also support bridge and culvert projects. Five bridge and culvert projects worth $2.89 million will be supported through the grants, the ministry said, and money will also be going to six high-volume road construction projects valued at $3.5 million.

“The rural municipal road system plays an important part in getting our exports to market,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said in a statement. “Our investment in MREP supports municipalities and plays an important part in keeping our economy strong.”

The province is also making a $6.6 million investment into their Clearing the Path corridors initiative, which connects rural communities to primary-weight roads to help economic development.
