Lodge fundraiser a success in third year

May 7, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Attendees at the Northlands Pioneer Lodge (NPL) fundraiser this past weekend took a trip from Vegas to Vaudeville without ever having to leave the Meadow Lake Civic Centre. This annual event helped raised funds and awareness about the forthcoming facility.

Celebrity impersonator Bonnie Kilroe portrayed over 20 famous performers, and had the crowd participate throughout her act. The event also included a flower auction which raised hundreds of dollars.

The steering committee was pleased with the near-sold out event, according to fundraising chair Geoff Barton.

“We were just shy of 300 in the crowd,” he said. “We’re just comparing it to the previous two we’ve done, and from the first show that we’ve done to this out, there’s huge growth in turnout for it. It’s really picking up momentum which is good to see.”

The committee is still counting the fundraising total. Barton said while fundraising is always a priority for these types of events, the ability to increase awareness for the cause is just as important.

“It was a really successful event for us, I think everyone had a really good time, and we got lot of great comments after,” Barton said. “We never really set a [fundraising] goal. The big thing is getting our message out there, making sure people know about what we’re doing. Having that many people in the seats was great. Everyone sticking around for the whole thing… the place was packed right until the very end.”

The fundraising goal for furniture and fixtures in the new lodge is around $3 million. Once built, it will be located on Ninth St. W.
