More youth mental health programs added by M.L.’s Positively Parenting

Meadow Lake youths will have more places to turn for support thanks to a local organization.

Positively Parenting recently launched their Get Your Mental Health On initiative, which includes a number of projects focussing on mental health resources. Program Manager Thyra Berg said We Care Packages are now available at the emergency room at the hospital, the clinic, RCMP detachment, victim services and Carpenter High School.

“Those packages that will be given to people who have attempted suicide,” Berg said. “It contains resources, information packages, distraction activities like a fidget spinner or adult colouring book, and some personal items like toothpaste. We wanted to show people who were struggling that there’s resources here in the community for them.”

Similarly, a caregivers’ package is also available for those who might know someone struggling with mental health. Berg said those packages contain documents with warning signs to look for and self-care tips.

Another program in its development stages is a youth-led support group for young people at risk of suicide. Berg said the support group will be a participant-led safe space to discuss challenges and do some activities which could help improve mental health.

“We’re still looking at how it’s going to work, but it’s very needed in the community,” Berg said.

The organization recently received $10,000 from Tolko’s Meadow Lake OSB Division, which Berg said came as a big boost.

“We’re so impressed with their commitment to the community,” Berg said. “They seem to really get it, and they understand the importance of youth in the community and their mental health.”

In the fall, Berg said the group hopes to start facilitating larger youth and family events like dances, gym nights, and other positive activities.
