M.L. council passes first reading of cannabis zoning bylaw

Meadow Lake City Council has worked for months to iron out the details, and now that they’ve passed the first reading of the cannabis zoning bylaw, the next step is feedback from the public.

A public forum is scheduled for June 11, where community members can share their thoughts on the upcoming legalization with Meadow Lake’s council and administration. City Manager Diana Burton said public consultation is important required before the bylaw can officially be passed after three readings.

The topic was last discussed at council’s April 23 meeting, when administration proposed placing cannabis production and cultivation zones in the city’s heavy industrial zone, which council was in full agreement with. Council said the only place they wanted cannabis retail sales to occur was in the downtown commercial district.

“The downtown commercial zone is for small storefronts,” Burton said. “The downtown commercial zone isn’t near sensitive-use areas like schools, parks, and playgrounds.”
