May 25, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Some recent wetter weather has helped firefighters battling the flames and smoke of a wildfire Meadow Lake provincial park.

The ‘Tuff’ Fire originally ignited on Sunday, May 13 west of Waterhen Lake. Since then, it has swiftly grown in size and shifted directions a few times. On May 15, it residents of Waterhen Lake First Nation and Jeannette Lake were given orders to evacuate. On Sunday, May 20, 13 cabins were destroyed by flames at Flotten Lake, despite firefighters’ efforts and also being surrounded by a sprinkler suppression system.

As of this afternoon, crews and heavy equipment, supported by helicopters, continue to work this fire. Control lines continue to hold at 65 square kilometres in size, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment.

Scattered precipitation and cooler temperatures in the area during most of the week have reduced fire behaviour. Firefighters continue to make good progress thanks to more cooperative weather conditions and less wind. However, Local smoke and access concerns may be an issue due to the fire activity.
