M.L. Sox hope early wins led to successful season

May 30, 2018 | 2:00 PM

So far this season, the Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox are 3-0, and team manager Kevin Gerwing said he hopes this momentum will mean big things for the team this year.

Out of the three games they’ve played so far, they’ve been victorious with scores of 12-5, 6-1 and 12-11. While this has been positive news for the team, their game against the Mervin Flyers on Tuesday, May 29 was a close one.

Gerwing said it started off strong for the Sox, but some walks and errors started to hurt both teams.

“It became kind of a battle who could score more runs, but we came out on top 12-11,” he said. “We were down by six at one point, but then had a big inning that saw us actually score nine and get up by three. I don’t think either team would be too happy with how they played, but we’re happy with the results.”

He said positives during last night’s game were hitting, with Jordan Oystrick scoring a triple and Alex Vidal batting a double.

“We did our job at the plate,” Gerwing said. “Defensively, we could have been a lot sharper, but Dylan Esau came out and threw three strong innings at the end the game to close the door for us and help us secure the win.”

Gerwing said the real test will be this weekend as the Sox host two strong clubs in a Sunday double header, the Standard Hill Lakers and the Lloydminster Blue Jays. Each of the teams won in their provincial tiers in the 2017 season.

“The second half of our schedule is going to be a lot more difficult,” he said. “We’ll have to play up to our standard to continue doing well. Most of our mistakes right now are just mental, we just have to stay focused every play.”

The Sox travel back to Edam tomorrow. The double header will take place at Meadow Lake’s Lions Park on Sunday, June 3, with the Lakers game at 1 p.m. and the Blue Jays at 5 p.m.
