M.L. Sox split Sunday doubleheader games

Jun 4, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox hosted two very competitive teams in a doubleheader at Assman field Sunday, winning one game and losing another.

The first of the day’s games was delayed as the team dried out the field after a rainy evening the night before. First swing came at 2 p.m. against the Standard Hill, who beat out the Sox in their provincial tier last season. The Sox came out on top of the first game with a score of 7-3. Pitcher Craig Weran said the game was a positive one for the Sox as they overcame some challenges since the last time the two teams met.

“Quincy [Winkler] pitched really well and we played great defence,” Weran said. “They’re a good team who beat us last year, so we’re really happy to have beaten them.”

The second game against the Lloydminster Blue Jays was a different story, as the Border City team pulled ahead early, leading Llodyminister to a sixth-inning 15-2 two victory.

“They’ve been a good team for a long time,” Weran said. “Those boys can hit the ball, and we had our hands full. We just didn’t play well enough.”

Some younger pitchers had a few changes to work on their throws, including Dylan Esau, Owen Dancy, and Alex Vidal. Weran said it was good for the younger contingent to get some important game training.

Overall, Weran said the team is content with how the season is going thus far. The loss against the Jays was their first so far this season, which means the Sox are sitting at 5-1.

“We would have been thrilled going 2-0, and disappointed going 0-2,” Weran said. “We’re not too terribly disappointed; we’re still in great shape for the season.”
