A 41-year-old man is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon after a tense incident on the Big River First Nation early Friday morning.

According to the RCMP, officers patrolling the First Nation attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in the early hours of June 15. The driver did not stop, police said, and pulled into a residence on the First Nation with officers close behind.

After entering the residence, RCMP said the suspect attempted to assault a police officer with a weapon. Officers contained the scene with help from Police Dog Services, RCMP said, and the suspect made a last effort to flee on foot but was caught and arrested.

The suspect, 41-year-old Lonny Lachance of the Big River First Nation, was remanded to appear in a Prince Albert courtroom June 18. In addition to assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, Lachance faces charges of resisting arrest, obstructing a peace officer, uttering threats, driving while suspended, and driving with inadequate headlamps. He is presumed innocent at this stage.
