M.L. Sr. Sox dominate weekend doubleheader

There were some big victories for Meadow Lake’s Sr. White Sox as they hosted two strong opponents over the weekend.

The Sox first met with the Wilkie Brewers on Sunday, and more than doubled them with a score of 15-7. Pitcher Craig Weran said the ball was on the Sox’ side.

“They’re a good team and we just played really well,” Weran said. “Quincy Winkler pitched four innings that game, then Owen Dancy came in. We had a pretty large lead the last couple innings. We played pretty well defensively.”

The Sox’ next game against the Unity Cardinals was a slower start for Meadow Lake as the Cardinals pulled ahead early, though the lead didn’t last long.

“They threw a good, young pitcher, Blake Robertson,” Weran said. “They were up on us early but we got to them in the third and fourth inning. We were just hitting the ball all over and had some really good at-bats. We ended things with a score of 13-1 in five innings. They’re the defending league champions, so that felt great.”

The pair of wins means the Sox are now sitting 8-1 in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League standings. Weran said the players are doing their best to stay focused on each game.

“Early in the season we won a couple games which we felt like we had to win,” he said. “We’re up against some pretty good teams coming up so hopefully we can keep up.”

The Sox are heading to North Battleford Monday to play a makeup game against the Beavers. The team will then face the Lloydminster Twins this weekend.
