CHS wrestlers celebrate provincial banners

Jun 19, 2018 | 5:00 PM

New sports championship banners are hanging proudly at Meadow Lake’s Carpenter High School.

The school recently unveiled the AAA boys wrestling banner for 2018 and two gold medal banners for Jacob Ambroziak, who garnered one in 2017 and a second earlier this year.

Grade 11 athlete Parker Vandale-Niccolls said the entire group of wrestlers worked really hard to earn the 2018 banner.

“The quality of our wrestlers was just there this year,” he said. “We all placed pretty decently. Everyone who worked on the team, sparring partners and all, made us the wrestlers we are.”

Ambroziak said it was exciting to reveal the banners in front of the entire high school, and he hopes many more athletes join the ranks in future years.

“That was the best feeling, pulling the string and revealing [the banners],” he said. “Hopefully we’ll have more next year too, as we’re losing a fair amount of Grade 12s. I want to leave knowing there’s a good program.”

Coach Jason Guenther said he was proud of the entire group of wrestlers.

“They wanted to do better for themselves, as well as for the team,” he said. “It’s something that was unexpected this year. We had six athletes eligible for medals. Even with fourth-place finishes, we earned points for the team, and that’s what helps get the banner up there.”
