M.L. Sox happy with second place in league

Jun 25, 2018 | 12:00 PM

At this late point in the season, the Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox are pleased with how things have unfolded for the team in 2018.

Their most recent matchup against the Lloydminster Twins was a 7-4 loss, but pitcher Craig Weran said the Sox felt their performance against the first-place team was a strong one overall.

“We had a really good start and a really good finish,” he said. “We were up two runs right away, then they caught up with what seemed like a run each inning. We were 7-2 heading into the seventh inning; we scored a couple late and stranded a few of their runners, but it was too little too late.”

The Twins are undefeated so far this season in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League and Weran said they’ve always been a strong team. For Weran, however, sitting in second behind the league-leaders is somewhere the Sox are happy to be.

“If you’d have told us that we’d be sitting in second place in the last week-and-a-half of the season, we’d have been happy,” he said.

The Sox have only three games left in their season. They meet St. Walburg tomorrow at 6:30, head to North Battleford to face the Trappers Thursday, and then host Edam July 2.

“We like our chances to do well and hopefully win these next three games,” Weran said.

The playoffs are tentatively set to begin in the second week in July, and provincials are slated for August.
