Jul 3, 2018 | 2:00 PM

North West College has a new leader at the helm of its North Battleford and Meadow Lake campuses.

The college announced in a release Tuesday Jay Notay was selected as president and chief executive officer starting August 20.

Byron Merkosky, chair of the Board of Governors of North West College, said the board selected Notay for the position after an extensive national and international search. The college received 36 applications for the position.

Merkosky said he is pleased to see Notay moving into the role.

The college said in a release Notay has more than 22 years experience as an executive vice-president, dean, associate dean, and senior leader for urban and rural post-secondary institutions in Ontario and British Columbia. He is currently the executive vice-president – academic, applied research, and students with the College of New Caledonia in Prince George, B.C. The college added Notay was involved in establishing training programs and initiatives in partnership with Indigenous communities in B.C. and Ontario, as part of his experience.

The release said Notay is also currently in the process of completing his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education Administration from the University of Toronto. Notay has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Education from Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont.

Merkosky said Notay will be suitable in his new role as president of North West College to help the college pursue one of its strategic plans for future growth. The college will be looking at future expansion with a new campus in the Battlefords in about three years to accommodate its growing student population.

“We look at him as a change-agent. We have a new direction for the college and we think he fits that profile,” Merkosky said.

Merkosky added the board thanks Melanie Roberts for all her all her work serving as interim president and CEO since Tavia Laliberte left the position in February, after serving four years in the role.
