M.L. Sox win last game of 2018 season

Jul 5, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Their final game of the regular season may have been shorter than planned, but the Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox capped off 2018 with a 9-0 win and now have their sights set on North Saskatchewan River Baseball League playoffs.

The Meadow Lake team met the Edam Blue Sox at Assman Field last night in their final matchup of 2018. The White Sox ended up blanking Edam before the game was rained out thanks to a strong team effort, according to right fielder Sheldon Gregoire.

“We had a lot of our regular players this game, essentially dressing our lineup for playoffs,” Gregoire said. “Everyone hit very well. We had hits and got on base from almost everybody. When you couple that kind of offensive output with the way Quincy [Winkler] pitched, we’re a very hard team to beat and we’d like to carry that moving forward.”

The win was especially welcome for the Sox, as the squad fell short to the St. Walburg Reds 4-1 June 26, and 11-3 against the Battlefords Trappers on June 28. The team’s final standing is nine wins and five losses for the season, placing them in fourth position.

Gregoire said now that all their games are complete, the Sox are in wait-and-see mode until the other teams wrap up regular season action as well. He said he doesn’t believe the Sox will be practicing before playoffs start sometime next week.

“We ended the season on a good note,” Gregoire said. “We’re hoping for a good seeding in the playoffs and hopefully we can go far.”
