M.L. pool re-opened after replacement part installed

Meadow Lakers can start to enjoy one of their local amenities again.

The Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre has been closed since May 26, when a part of the pool’s pump called an impeller, which circulates the water, broke down. City staff were originally hoping the replacement part would arrive mid-June, but it arrived later than initially planned according to City Manager Diana Burton.

“It was fixed and installed as of Thursday, June 28,” she said. “The temperature then needed to be brought back up, which requires the chemicals in the pool to be brought back to regulation. That took until Sunday, so we re-opened Tuesday [July 3].”

Burton said since the pool re-opened, feedback has been mostly positive.

“People are excited that it’s open and that the spray park is going to be back to its regularly-scheduled hours as well,” she said.

Burton said the main reason for the delay was because the new part had to be custom-built.

“The pump that we have is rare,” she said. “We weren’t aware of that until it arrived here. We’re going to talk to our contractors who do a lot of the mechanical work on the pool to see what their perspective is. A brand new one should last for a while, but we’re wondering if we should maybe order another to have on hand in case.”

As a thank-you to community members for their patience, the aquatic centre is offering free admission to the spray park today.
