Sentencing delayed for youth in McCallum case

Jul 16, 2018 | 12:00 PM

While the original manslaughter charges were dropped against him in the shooting death of Kegan McCallum last fall, a youth who was present when it happened is still facing several charges involved with the case.

McCallum died in hospital after being fatally shot in a home on the city’s west side the morning of Nov. 13, 2017. The shooting prompted the City of Meadow Lake to put the community’s pool and arena on lockdown until the evening. Throughout the week, Northwest School Division provided counsellors to any students in need of extra support.

Three days later on Nov. 16, a male youth was arrested in North Battleford. The name of the now 16-year-old cannot be released due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He was originally charged for manslaughter, but the Crown dropped charges on Feb. 6, 2018, citing insufficient evidence. However, he is charged with possessing a prohibited firearm, concealing evidence, and providing false information.
