M.L. Sox knocked out of NSRBL playoffs

Despite a strong regular season, the Meadow Lake Sr. White Sox were eliminated in the first round of North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) playoffs.

Playoffs started Thursday, June 12 with the team travelling for its first game against the Wilkie Brewers. The Sox finished the season in a four-way tie for second place with nine wins and five losses, and the Brewers were eight and six.

Team Manager Kevin Gerwing said the team tried hard during both recent matches but unfortunately fell short in both the away and home games, which took place last night.

“Unfortunately our bats went cold as theirs heated up,” Gerwing said. “We lost game one in Wilkie 11-1 and game two 10-2 in Meadow to eliminate us from playoffs. Not the result we wanted for sure.”

He said the team’s main goal now is to work on conditioning an practice for the Baseball Saskatchewan Senior AA Tier 3 Provincials in North Battleford, which run Aug. 10 to 12.

“We now are going to shift our focus into provincials,” Gerwing said.

He said the team was overall pleased with their performance during the regular season, adding he has high hopes for the squad in the future.

“Our young guys are developing nicely and if we can keep our core together we will have a strong team in the years to come,” Gerwing said.
