Changes to the Safe Driver Recognition program

Go to www.sgi.sk.ca/sdr to learn about changes to the Safe Driver Recognition (SDR) program.

The SDR program is being changed to reward safe drivers with greater discounts on their auto insurance and offer stronger deterrents to those with unsafe driving habits.

Effective October 12, 2016:

  • The safety rating scale will start to grow to +25, allowing the drivers with the safest records to earn a discount on vehicle insurance of up to 25%.
  • Financial penalties will double from $25 to $50 per point for drivers in the penalty zone.
  • All speeding convictions (excluding photo speed enforcement tickets) will result in loss of points under the SDR program. In addition, points for minor speeding tickets in the Driver Improvement Program, Graduated Driver Licensing Improvement program and the Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing Improvement program will increase from 1 point to 2 points.
  • If you’re found responsible for a collision you will lose points, but the seriousness of the collision will be taken into consideration. Drivers who cause collisions with claim payouts under $700 will lose 4 points. Those who cause collisions with claim payouts of $700 or more will lose 6 points.
  • SDR appeals and claim buy-backs will no longer impact the points assessed in the Driver Improvement Program, Graduated Driver Licensing Improvement program and the Motorcycle Graduated Driver Licensing Improvement program.

The Safe Driver Recognition (SDR) program is an incentive program for safe driving. It rewards drivers with good driving records with a discount on their basic vehicle insurance. Drivers responsible for collisions and more serious traffic convictions are assessed demerit points and a corresponding financial penalty for each incident they’re involved in.
