Carpenter High School holds graduation for its 109 students

Meadow Lake students are about to start a new phase of their life after today.

It’s the theme for the 109 students graduating from Meadow Lake’s Carpenter High School and rather fitting for the boys and girls who are embarking on a quest to the next chapter of their lives while becoming men and women in the process.

Olivia Balisky, valedictorian for the class had a rather unique, quirky and fun way to get her message across to her fellow graduates.

“I’ve always loved performing and I knew I couldn’t do just the regular speech at the podium so I had to change it up and I’ve Googled a few of them,” Balisky said. “In junior high I’d always Google the speeches and different ways to do them and I finally got the chance.”

Balisky went through the process of the different schools the students in Meadow Lake went to before finishing by saying, “you’re important and even if you flip patties you’re needed on this earth.”

During the cap and gown ceremony held in the gymnasium at Carpenter High School, scholarships were awarded to the students entering the next chapter of their lives.

This year, a total of $30,900 was awarded to students through different scholarships.

They ranged from $300 to $1,800 and were awarded through company and non-profit organization volunteers, memorial and specific field of study scholarships.

Graduation for the students continues tonight.

Grand march celebrations begin at 7 p.m. in the PineRidge Ford Arena on the Flying Dust First Nation.
