Lady Spartans volleyball team opens season on winning note

The Carpenter High School Lady Spartans volleyball team has opened its season on a high note after winning in Prince Albert.

The team’s first taste of game action came this past weekend where the girls played during Carleton High School’s tournament Saturday, Sept. 10. Finishing third after the opening round, the Lady Spartans went 1-1 in the matches. The split games forced them into a tie-breaker, then in the consolation final which they won in three sets.

Head coach of the girls, Laura Lockwood said practices started the day after classes resumed, Sept.2, and there’s been so much interest, she’s had to form two teams.

“We started off having 21 girls, so we’re going to have a development team,” Lockwood said. “There’ll be two teams going so more girls can play, giving them more experience and getting their skills developed.”

The Spartans roster is young this year. With only two Grade 12 students, the majority of the team’s in Grade 11 and 10.

Lockwood said the two seniors, Amber and Taylor Dishko will be co-captains of the team.

“I expect them to bring up the energy level. I expect them to be the lead communicators when they’re out there,” she said. “I want them to get the girls to work harder. When excuses are out, they calm the team so we can get back to playing instead of having to worry about other things when we’re out on the floor.”

Practices continue this week for the team as the girls prepare for their next games this weekend, Sept. 16 and 17 in Cold Lake.
