Hydrant maintenance happening through summer months

Meadow Lakers may notice the hydrants in town getting some attention this summer.

In July, workers started testing hydrants as a proactive measure for fire response. Since unidirectional flushing took place in June, residents shouldn’t see any change in their water quality. However, there might be a temporary drop of water pressure in the immediate area, according to city Manager Diana Burton.

“It is meant for the fire department to have an idea of what kind of flow rates they have coming out of the hydrants should they need to use them,” Burton said.

Starting this month and into September, all of the city’s hydrants will be inspected and winterized, which is an annual procedure to ensure all the hydrants are functioning, identify any issues, and to add antifreeze to the mechanical parts of the hydrants. 

Burton said scheduling for this type of work could occur on fairly short notice, as a few different departments need to be informed. The fire department needs to get the go-ahead from waterworks, but she added the city will attempt to keep residents informed as quickly as possible.
