M.L. committee gearing up for fundraising to build new grandstand

The Meadow Lake Grandstand Committee is gearing up to start new fundraising efforts to re-build the community’s grandstand.

A meeting to discuss fundraising options is set for 7 p.m. April 16 at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre.

Committee President Dustin Gorst encourages everyone to attend.

“We want lots of people, and we want the business community to back us and be there to support us,” Gorst said.

The old grandstand was scheduled to be torn down March 25, but due to the melting snow and mud, crews are on hold.

Due to its poor condition, the grandstand is no longer insurable, Gorst said. He added it’s not worth the cost to upgrade the old structure from the 60s. The last time it was used was two years ago.

“It was going to be lots of money to fix it up to insure it, so the goal was to build new, and do it properly,” Gorst said.

The estimated replacement cost is still to be determined. Gorst said the new facility will have a covered roof so it can be used for more events, without weather concerns.

The committee is working with city council to determine if the new grandstand can be built in the same location.

About $70,000 in funds have already been raised for the project.

“We had a very successful lobster fest last fall,” Gorst said, adding that a chuckwagon race fundraiser also went well to bring in funds.

While Gorst hopes the build will start within the next couple of years he said there is no special timeline for building the new grandstand, adding that “the most important thing is to do it right when we do it.”
