Mayor Vidal resigns to focus on federal ambitions

Mayor Gary Vidal has resigned his role with the city, effective following last night’s city council meeting to focus on his federal election ambitions.

In his resignation letter, Vidal said it was “a very difficult decision for me but I believe it is necessary to focus my time and energy in the coming months on being elected the Member of Parliament for the Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River electoral district.”

The NDP’s Georgina Jolibois is the elected member for the riding.

Under provincial regulations, City Council must set a date for the byelection and appoint an Acting Mayor for the interim at the next regular meeting of council, which will be April 23.

The byelection must be held within six months as it is not an election year. Whoever is elected in the byelection will hold the office of Mayor until the next general election, scheduled for Nov. 9, 2020.

“We at City Hall are grateful for Mayor Vidal’s past years of dedicated service to our community, and wish him all the best in the future,” a press release from City Hall said.
