Drama club students from Carpenter High School were in high spirits last weekend when they came home with a bevy of awards from the St. Walberg Drama Festival for their performance of Boxes by Kendra Thomas.

Boxes is described by the author as a coming of age story about teens dealing with life’s pressures and what they believe others expect of them.

Shelby Kozloski, the instructor and director for the school’s drama club, said she was impressed with the students’ hard work, adding all Grade 12 students won awards this year.

“I’m really proud of them,” she said. “They were happy with how they did. They were excited to come home.”

The St. Walhberg Drama Fest ran at the Elk’s Hall from April 4 to 6.

Carpenter High School students decided to set their play in the 1980s to add a little fun to the production.

“We chose to make the play 80s themed in order to make things more interesting, and give more depth to our characters,” Kozloski said. ”There were also some dated ideas in the play, which we felt would be more suited to the 80s.”

Among the award winners was Jazmin McKee whom Kozloski said “did a lot in the production that you couldn’t do without… She was always cheerful and positive.”

The students’ production of Boxes won the Best Technical Performance award and was runner up for the Best Overall Performance.

Jazmin McKee was honoured with the Cheer Award.

Zane Klics received the Acting Award for Merit.

Hannah Gilbert won the runner up title for the Mary Ellen Burgess Award for Outstanding Acting.

Madison Wilde, who was the stage manager, won the Technical Award of Merit for the Best Prompt Book .

Kozloski said along with the students’ hard work, she was thankful for Cheryl Stobbe and Jason Worobec who helped with the production.
