U of S names McCreath as new chancellor

The University of Saskatchewan is set to welcome its newest chancellor.

The university’s senate approved a three-year appointment for Grit McCreath to become the 16th chancellor on campus during a meeting on April 27.

“This is truly one of the most significant honours I can think of,” McCreath said of her new role that is to begin on July 1. “I am so humbled to be able to serve in this role because the university has been central to my life, even as a child.”

Taking over chancellor duties from Roy Romanow is the latest chapter in a storied history for McCreath and the U of S.

A media release from the U of S said McCreath spent many Sundays on campus as a child with her parents before enrolling and graduating from the College of Education in 1991. Over the better part of 20 years, she spent time on the university’s senate and the board of governors.

McCreath’s most recent role was the university’s inaugural ambassador in 2015. Those duties included hosting meetings with donors and alumni, recruiting students, attending university events and ceremonies, as well as mentoring individuals and groups.

“I see this role as an extension of my work as the university’s honorary ambassador,” McCreath said via media release. “I am excited to enhance the university’s reputation, celebrate its history, support the exceptional leadership of President (Peter) Stoicheff, and work with students, faculty and alumni.”

McCreath spent 32 years as a teacher and administrator, taking her to places like Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. She was also named a 2019 recipient of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.

As chancellor, McCreath will head university convocation ceremonies, confer degrees, chair senate meetings and serve on the board of governors.
