The Meadow Lake Heat U-16 girls took home gold at provincials on Sunday. The team went undefeated in their division at the Henk Ruys Soccer Centre in Saskatoon.

With 45 teams in the league, provincials broke down into different divisions with the top 10 teams put into division one. Meadow Lake was placed in division two after seeding eleventh in the league.

The girls started the weekend by winning all three games on Saturday against Thunder Creek from Moose Jaw, the Redcoat Rebels of St. Albert and Regina Summit Red.

In the playoffs on Sunday, the Heat faced the Swift Current Jr. Sundogs Black and then Weyburn Fusion. Weyburn started strong in the semifinal game with a close first set of 26-24. The Heat were able to gather themselves and came back taking the next two sets and moved on to the finals.

The Heat then went up against Summit Red in the finals. The two teams have met twice this season with both teams winning a game. After falling behind in the first set, the Heat made a comeback and took the set 25-22. They carried the momentum and finished the game 25-18 in the second set, securing the division two gold medals.

“I think we were a little bit lucky to win the first set but regardless we did win it,” Coach Chris Ellis said. “In the second set, we took control from the start and just rode it until the end.”

Ellis said despite the high caliber players coming from bigger cities in Saskatchewan, he is proud of the quality of play from his Meadow Lake players.

“We’re competing against Regina teams, Saskatoon teams, Swift Current, places that are bigger than us,” he said. “To have a team made up of strictly Meadow Lake players, with the exception of one girl from La Loche, to compete at this level and do this well, I think, is a feather in the cap.”

The U-16 Girls will now be focusing on nationals which will be held from May 18-21 in Regina.
