Local provincial parks advise safety precautions for campers ahead of long weekend

Van Koughnett advises people who are out hiking in the park to go in groups, wear bright clothing and make a lot of noise while walking. For the campers, Van Koughnett said to keep food, pet food and garbage inside the camper or vehicle and to keep an eye on their pets during their stay.

For campers heading to Greig Lake or Kimball Lake Van Koughnett said the newly built service centres will not ready for the long weekend.

“There’s still some minor details that have to be completed for those two projects,” said Van Koughnett. “We just cannot open them at this time however, there will be water throughout the campgrounds at those locations. They’ll be able to fill up their units, they just won’t be able to use the shower, washroom or laundry facilities at the service centres.”

Terry Sawatzky, the Park Manager for Makwa Lake Provincial Park, said the park is ready for campers to enjoy.

“The lakes are thawed and the docks are in,” Sawatzky said. “Everything is good to go for the weekend.”

Sawatzky noted the alcohol and cannabis ban is in effect for all provincial parks from May 16 to 20.

The Ministry for Parks, Culture and Sport cites the ban comes from concerns of disturbances and vandalism from intoxication in the parks during the May long weekend. The ban applies to all picnic sites and campgrounds within the park and recreational areas.

Aside from the ban, Sawatzky said the campgrounds will be running as usual and the lakes will also be open for fishing.
