Beaver River Archery Club hosting 3D shoot this weekend

May 24, 2019 | 5:05 PM

3D shoots usually use different plastic animals as targets but this year the Beaver River Archery Club decided to bring in a seven-foot tall monster into the competition.

Carleen Fehr, one of the founders of the Beaver River Archery Club, said they’ve brought in a sasquatch to be a part of this year’s annual 3D Archery Shoot.

The competition is split into age groups: Adult (21+), Junior (18-20), Cadet (15-17), Cub (13-14), Pre-Cub (10-12) and Peewee (nine and under). Each age group will have a different maximum distance to hit their targets.

This weekend’s 3D shoot is an unknown distance shoot meaning competitors will have to judge the distance themselves to hit the target. Distances could be harder to tell for some archers because the targets will be at the bottom of a hill or could be behind some bushes.

Fehr said in the past few years they would average around 40 competitors across all age groups. But, in previous years there would also be another archery shoot happening nearby that drew some of their archers.

“Some people have not come to ours to go to that bigger one but now that’s next week,” Fehr said.

The money raised will go back towards the club for the youth group, new targets and rental costs for the Rapid View Curling Centre which the club uses during the winter months.

Fehr said everyone is welcome to come to the event.

“Sometimes we have people pop in just to see what it’s about,” Fehr said with a laugh.

The shoot will be on a range 13.7 km northwest of Rapid View on Highway 55. Registration is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m on May 25 and 26.
