M.L. council hold off on Mustangs lease agreement

Scheduling conflicts and dressing room availability were the main issues brought up between multiple Meadow Lake hockey clubs in a lease agreement with the city for the 2019/2020 season.

The lease agreement for the Meadow Lake Mustangs use of the arena and changing rooms was tabled by city lawmakers on May 27 as council wanted more information on the problems discussed between the clubs last season.

In last year’s agreement, the Broncos and Mustangs agreed to have separate locked storage rooms for each team in the dressing rooms and that the two teams would share the space. However, over the season, the two teams had problems working around each other in the dressing rooms.

“Glen [Winkler] and I have talked about [the dressing rooms] extensively. It’s a mess and it needs work,” Darryl Worms, the representative for the Meadow Lake Senior Broncos, said.

Also at the meeting were Jace Anderson, representative for Meadow Lake Minor Hockey, and Coun. Glen Winkler who excused himself from council to represent the Meadow Lake Mustangs Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club.

Issues brought up in the discussion were the scheduling would sometimes be too close between the teams and it would congest the dressing rooms, which was especially evident during doubleheaders.

The clubs also said the dressing rooms are not large enough to accommodate visiting teams, forcing the teams to use two rooms.

There was also some confusion between the teams on who was responsible for cleaning the dressing rooms as they were often left untidy.

The issues were first brought to council at a meeting in October where Winkler proposed an expansion of the dressing rooms in the arena.

Worms brought up the idea of renovating two unused bathrooms to create new dressing rooms as well as tearing down walls between dressing rooms to accommodate larger teams.

Robin Mitchell, recreation manager for Meadow Lake, said he is currently looking at ways to renovate the arena while still being up to code.

Council decided the agreement would be tabled and all teams would talk to Mitchell who would report back at the next council meeting.

All representatives from the hockey clubs agreed they don’t want to fight amongst each other but need to find a way to share the ice.

“We aren’t opposed to anything and we want to work with everybody,” Worms said.
