Benefit concert to raise money for highschool students a success

The sound of music was in Lions Park Thursday evening.

Leroy Laliberte and the Dirt Road Maniacs played a benefit concert at the Pineridge Ford Amphitheatre to help raise money for Carpenter High School students who cannot afford to take part in afterschool activities.

“I think it was a success,” Laliberte said. “It definitely did what it was supposed to do. It brought families and the community closer together.”

Judy Pigott, organizer of The Spartan Outdoor Jam, said she estimates the event drew between 70 to 80 people and raised approximately $1,200.

Guest singers at the jam included Loretta King, Chico and Leroy’s brother Wes Laliberte.

The jam was a collaboration between Laliberte and the Carpenter High School Community Council (SCC).

While it was a collaborative effort, Laliberte said most of the work was done by the SCC.

“People don’t realize and I don’t think they get enough credit for the amount of things they do all year round to be able to make it beneficial for these young people,” he said.

The idea for the concert first came about when Laliberte, a part of Building Up ‘R’ Nations (B.U.R.N.) Youth, was invited to speak at the high school fundraiser in March.

At the fundraiser, Laliberte spoke about issues young people may face like self esteem and mental health issues.

“It gives a lot of these young people the opportunity to speak on topics that they sometimes don’t get the chance to,” he said.

Inspired by the fundraiser, Laliberte wanted to do more with the school.

“I asked them if they would be interested in possibly doing another fundraiser in the spring because every dollar would count to help these kids,” Laliberte said.

Pigott hopes to continue the concert next year and wants to invite Laliberte back.

“We would love to have Leroy and his band next year,” Pigott said. “If it’s a success we’ll try again. We’ll do anything for these kids.”
