Meadow Lake U13 Sox undefeated in Saskatoon tournament

The Meadow Lake Sox are starting the 2019 season with an impressive tournament win.

The U13 boys provincial team went undefeated at the Saskatoon AA tournament over the weekend of May 31 to June 2. The tournament brought in 23 teams from Saskatchewan and Alberta.

“I think they’re really happy and really proud of themselves,” Regan Beck, head coach for the team, said. “For a town of 5,000 people and ten local boys to go in and impress as much as they did and play as well as they did, they are proud of themselves and they should be.”

The boys dominated in their six games over the weekend, which started with a 15-0 shutout win over the Red Deer Braves. The Sox then won 16-5 against Saskatoon Blue Jay Warriors and 21-7 against the Sask Five Giant Sluggers.

In the quarterfinals, the team faced off against the Edmonton Angels. The game ended 20-2, with Meadow Lake going to the semi-finals where they were beat the Regina Pacers 13-2.

They then ended the tournament the same way they started with a 11-0 shutout win over the Clive Red Sox.

“Our ace, Ryder Ellis, was throwing that game and he threw fantastic,” Beck said. “He dominated what was a very good hitting ball team. If you look at Clive’s numbers throughout the weekend they put up lots of runs coming into the final. I think they ran out of gas a little bit but I think a bigger part of that [game] is what we did to them.”

Beck said the Sox have been together for the past four or five years and praised their defensive play.

The team’s next tournament will be in Muenster on June 21, which Beck said will be more difficult as the tournament leans towards a higher caliber of teams.

“We will definitely be more challenged,” said Beck. “It’ll be very difficult to come out of Muenster with a win but it’s probably the first time that we’ve ever gone there thinking that’s a very real possibility.”

The Sox will end their season in Meadow Lake, which is hosting the provincial tournament from July 26 to 28.
