Co-op hosting fundraiser to raise money for co-worker

The Co-op C-store will be holding a barbeque fundraiser on Friday to raise money for a co-worker diagnosed with cancer.

Ron Phillips started at the C-store in November after retiring from the NorSask mill after 30 years.

“He’s the kind of guy who can’t sit down,” Sheldon McGilvery, assistant manager, said. “He came down and approached us and asked if he can work three or four hours a day.”

Phillips was diagnosed on the day of his 75th birthday. His daughter, Mabel Phillips, said even after the diagnosis the only thing on Ron’s mind was work.

“When he got sick he was really upset and would just keep saying ‘I just want to go back to work,’” Mabel said.

Mabel said her dad has always valued employment and enjoyed working at the C-store. She is touched to see her father’s co-workers and the community come together to help.

“I’m hoping he’s able to get out and I think it’ll be nice for him to see everybody there and bring the community together,” Mabel said.

“It’s our Co-op way,” added McGilvery. “We just want to help and do as much as we can for him.”

The barbeque will be held in the C-store parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m on June 7 and will be serving a burger and a drink for $5. All money raised from the BBQ will go towards Ron Phillips medical costs.
