Missing Calgary man presumed drowned in Smoothstone Lake

RCMP are presuming a missing Calgary man has drowned after searches on June 12 and 13 did not find him in the water or on the shoreline of Smoothstone Lake.

Green Lake RCMP were called to the lake on June 8 after receiving a report of a missing canoeist.

The 27-year-old man and a friend were camping in the area when the man left the campsite to go fishing in a canoe.

The man did not return and a local fisherman discovered his canoe submerged in the middle of the lake. RCMP report the man was not wearing a life-jacket when he left the camp and the wind had increased a great deal while he was gone.

RCMP and Saskatchewan Conservation Officers checked the shores and any place he may have reached land. Patrols were made on the water using Sonar and the RCMP Under Water Recovery Team made additional patrols over the week.

CASARA conducted an aerial search and RCMP have patrolled area roads using ATVs. Emergency Management Fire Services, Big River and Meadow Lake Search and Rescue teams assisted in shore line searches with boats and drones.

The RCMP have been in contact with the missing man’s family and have been updating them on the search.

Smoothstone Lake is located 139 kilometres north-east of Meadow Lake and is east of Dore Lake.
