M.L. schools celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day

Meadow Lake students will immerse themselves in Indigenous tradition and culture as part of National Indigenous Peoples Day on Friday.

Across Canada, June 21 is a day to respect and celebrate Indigenous diversity with traditional dance, music, games and activities.

This will be the second year Gateway Elementary School celebrates the event. Teacher Jana Ross said about 63 per cent of the schools population identify as Indigenous.

The school has planned a day full of activities for the students including Métis sash art, lacrosse, a game called stick-dice and Cree vocabulary bingo. The students will also learn about the medicinal uses of plants.

Last year the school brought in the Northern Prairie Dancers, a square dance group. The school also tried to bring in a special guest for this year but plans did not work out.

“We tried to get Celia Deschambault in,” Ross said. “She just wrote a book and it’s in Cree and English. We were going to get her to do an author reading but she’s off to a conference.”

Dorintosh Central School will be joining Gateway in the afternoon for a tipi raising ceremony.

Jubilee Community School will be spending the day outside starting at 9:30 a.m. in Lions Park. Students will take part in a tipi raising, powwow dancing, and traditional Indigenous games and music. Elders will also be at the park to teach and tell stories to the children.

Jonas Samson will also be taking part in National Indigenous Peoples Day with some lacrosse, beading, bannock making and a nature walk.
