CHS celebrates students’ achievements at emotional awards ceremony

Jun 19, 2019 | 4:15 PM

It was a happy and emotional day for students and teachers at the Carpenter High School awards ceremony.

The awards ceremony took place in the school theatre June 19 and recognized students’ efforts in academics, athletics and volunteering.

It was a joyous day for the students who were recognized for their hard work but for some teachers the ceremony was bittersweet as big changes are set for the school.

Over 10 staff members have transferred to different schools, retired or have taken time off in the next school year. Grade 9 students will also join the other high schoolers at Carpenter High School in September.

Sam Dawson is one of the teachers leaving the high school at the end of the semester.

Dawson coached football, track and field and helped with other extracurricular activities and the positions are now open. He feels the next group of teachers will fill the gaps and can continue those programs.

“We’ve got a lot of people who will be leaving or transferring to other schools and it’s going to create a different atmosphere here next year,” Dawson said. “But, it’s certainly a welcome challenge for the people that’ll be coming in and all the staff that are remaining here at the school.”

Dawson had some parting words for all students whether they received an award or not.

“The future is bright,” Dawson said. “They have so much potential and we have students who are going on to post-secondary, students that are going right into the workforce, students that are coming back to upgrade. Every single one of them is going to bring something good to the world and they should know that.”

One of the students who felt supported by the teachers of Carpenter High School was Evan Dymond. The Grade 10 student received multiple awards in the sciences and math and said it was his teachers who helped him find a passion in his studies.

“I feel really proud of it,” Dymond said. “For me, the awards are more significant given how drastically I’ve changed throughout the year.”

Dymond said at the start of the school year he was shy and wouldn’t take part in activities outside of school. At the time, he didn’t think much of science and math but now feels he has a new passion. He also wants to do more extracurriculars next year when he goes into Grade 11.

“I have a few planned for next year,” Dymond said. “I plan to continue with math and sciences for the career I hope to have in engineering.”

Other awards given out to students were:
