A local non-profit organization is letting residents of Meadow Lake shave their board director’s head for donations.

Bluesette Campbell, Board Director of People Advocating for Children with Exceptionalities (PACE), is selling sections of her hair at the Hair Squared event on June 21 to raise funds for PACE.

The event helps fund their Communication Support Associate pilot project where PACE, in partnership with the Northwest School Division, helps 10 families with inclusive education. Campbell said the program is in its second year and doing well. PACE is expanding the program to help 13 families in August.

“The school division would like to support more families and that means PACE would have to then put in more dollars,” Campbell said. “Which we’re happy to do, but because we’ve already budgeted for this particular year we need to create some additional funds.”

The hair is donated to make wigs for cancer patients. Campbell said having her head shaved isn’t a big deal as she already shaved her head seven times to make wigs. The idea for the event came from a friend who said since Campbell is going to shave her head anyway this time take donations.

According to Campbell, there is a specific way to shave a head to keep the hair clean for the wigs.

“It’s important that it’s in a square and in a ponytail because if you shave it all off and it falls to the floor and you can’t send it in for wigs,” Campbell said.

Campbell’s head will be divided into 30 to 35 squares and someone can pick a square and shave it for a minimum donation of $25.

Campbell said PACE is halfway to their goal of $1,000 after a $500 donation from the local 4-H Club.

The event starts at 12 p.m. at Eatery on Main and will then move to the Co-Op Grocery Store at 1 p.m., Dairy Queen at 2 p.m. and then Home Hardware at 3 p.m.

PACE accepts any amount of donations but a minimum donation of $25 is needed to shave a square of hair. Cash, cheque and e-transfers are all accepted forms of donation.
